Woman killed, man hurt in wrong-way crash on Sawgrass Expressway: FHP

A 38-year-old woman was killed in the crash, FHP officials said

A woman was killed and another driver was injured in a violent wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass Expressway in Sunrise early Wednesday, officials said.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the expressway just north of Oakland Park Boulevard shortly before 3 a.m., Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a red Buick sedan was heading south in the northbound lanes of the expressway when it crashed into a Freightliner truck.

The 38-year-old woman who was driving the Buick was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity wasn't released but FHP officials said she's from Midland, Georgia.

The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old man from Hialeah, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Videos from the scene showed officers and emergency medical personnel surrounding a vehicle that was barely recognizable. Nearby, a yellow tarp covered what was presumed to be the woman's body.

The crash had all northbound lanes closed at one point.

The investigation into the crash was ongoing.
